In 2017, Unitywater experienced an arc flash incident—fortunately, no one was injured. This event highlighted the need for a structured approach to managing arc flash risk. In response, Unitywater assessed and categorised the arc flash risk across all its switchboards, developed operational procedures, and implemented targeted training for staff at all levels.

Tim Stewart is an electrical engineer working in standards development at Unitywater. He has an extensive background in projects across water, wastewater, mining and power. Across his career he has worked within and led multi-discipline teams to deliver projects ranging in value from $1M up to $2B. At Unitywater his electrical and control system knowledge has helped deliver several large sewage treatment plant upgrades. He led the Arc Flash Mitigation project which defined and categorised arc flash risk which was a key safety project directly affecting many people across the business.
