Queensland’s urban water sector faces an urgent infrastructure cliff exacerbated by chronic underinvestment, and a wicked array of workforce and training challenges – all in the context of increasing regulation.
Widespread network leaks and ageing assets, some dating back decades, and an aging workforce mean the status quo is no longer viable. An estimated $45.3 billion is required statewide to replace and renew networks approaching the end of their operational lifespans.
Despite recent reviews into the delivery of water services across Australia and New Zealand, meaningful progress seems to have stalled and bold ambitions scaled back or, in some cases, lost completely.
A Case for Change is designed to unite sector leaders, engineers, policymakers, and key stakeholders to tackle what is emerging as a crisis. Together, attendees are confronting the realities of severe workforce constraints, critical gaps in funding, resource (human and other) shortages, and finding capital to maintain sustainable investment for essential asset renewals.
This event is a call to action for our entire urban water supply chain in a safe space. Through case studies, forward-looking presentations, and strategic networking, attendees will explore actionable solutions to progress the required reform measures essential for sustainable water businesses into the future.
2028 will be a big political year for Queensland’s urban water providers with local, state and federal elections. Outcomes and consensus from this Forum will direct the reform agenda and advocacy to meet this infrastructure cliff head on.
