Essentials Webinar Cyber Security for Water Businesses

03-Jul-2025

About this event

We want cyber-resilient water networks, but how do we solve the OT problem?

A key component of water infrastructure is operational technology (OT). OT is a term inclusive of SCADA and Control Systems and refers to the technology used for automatic control and monitoring of pump stations, treatment plants, dams, dosing plants, and similar water assets.

The Australian government has recognised the importance of cyber-resilient OT to our nation’s water infrastructure within the Security of Critical Infrastructure (SOCI) legislation. While only water networks of a certain scale are subject to this legislation, smaller water networks could be included in the future. Cyber security practices across the water sector will be influenced by SOCI legislation for some time to come.

Cyber security for OT across industries tends to lag the practices and technology for IT, despite the risks of cyber incidents tending to be larger in OT. The water sector is no different with issues such as legacy and/or unmanaged OT assets looked after by a small number of subject matter experts internal and external to water organisations.

This webinar will:

  • introduce OT and OT cyber security,
  • discuss common threats and resulting impacts on the water sector,
  • review the SOCI legislation and its influence on the water sector, and
  • provide insights from the water industry and other industries in approaching OT cyber-resilience
