North Burnett Regional Council took out the trophy for the best tasting water in the South East Queensland regional final of the Orica Australia Best of the Best Queensland Water Taste Test.

The competition was judged by four water industry experts at a qldwater regional conference held at the Maroochy Surf Club.  The Maroochydore event, kindly hosted by Unitywater, provided South East Queensland Water Service Providers with valuable, up-to-date water management information from leading water and sewerage experts as well as state and commonwealth government representatives.

The winning water came from North Burnett’s Eidsvold scheme. “The water comes out the Burnett River through an alluvial bore and has a fairly simple treatment process with only sand filtering and chlorination,” Trevor Harvey from North Burnett Regional Council said.

Utilities that battled it out in the first semi-final included Bundaberg Regional Council, Gympie Regional Council, North Burnett Regional Council, Unitywater, Queensland Urban Utilities, Wide Bay Water and Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council with judges describing tastes as earthy, refreshing, slightly salty, rural and more.

The taste test, which forms part of qldwater’s Water Connections Tour, is a light-hearted way to promote the hard work of local authorities in delivering quality water services to Queensland communities.  The six regional finalists will contest the grand final prize to be held at the Water Industry Operators Association conference on the Gold Coast on 7 June 2012.

The competition coincides with six regional conferences that are aimed to link Queensland water service providers with technical and management expertise to help plan and safeguard their community’s future water supply and sewerage infrastructure needs.

Other regional events in 2012 include Longreach on 30 April, Bowen on 4 May and Cairns on 24 May.   For more information please visit http://www.qldwater.com.au/Water_Taste_Test
