The water industry thrives on the dedication and innovation of its professionals, and this year, one young operator stands out for his exceptional contributions: Luke Reid from Bundaberg Regional Council.

Luke’s journey in the water sector has been nothing short of remarkable, culminating in his recognition as the 2024 Young Operator of the Year. His story is not only an inspiration to his peers but also a beacon for young people considering a career in this vital industry.

From Plumber to Water Industry Leader

Luke’s journey into the water industry began just over two years ago, when he transitioned from working as a plumber at a sugar mill—a job he held for over eight years—to joining Bundaberg Regional Council.

"I was happy just to be nominated," Luke shared, reflecting on his surprise at winning the award. "I couldn't believe it when I took it out as well!"

His decision to switch careers was driven by a desire to explore new challenges and expand his horizons. The move proved to be rewarding, as Luke quickly discovered a passion for the diverse and dynamic nature of water operations.

Luke’s enthusiasm for his work is evident in his day-to-day activities.

"You do something different each and every day," he explains. "It’s been great to have so many different plumbers and people to learn from. I'm still learning and taking away bits of information every single day, so it’s really good to be continuously evolving through the help of everyone else."

This continuous learning and adaptation have been key to his success, allowing him to excel in his role and stand out among his peers.

A Commitment to Safety and Teamwork

One of the qualities that set Luke apart is his unwavering commitment to safety.

"Ensuring we all get home safely and injury-free each day is my top priority," he says.

Luke’s strong work ethic is driven by a deep sense of pride in what he does and a positive attitude towards overcoming challenges. His focus on maintaining a safe working environment is not just about following protocols; it’s about caring for his colleagues and the community they serve.

Luke attributes much of his success to the support he has received from his superiors and colleagues at Bundaberg Regional Council.

"This award not only reflects my personal success, it’s also a reflection on my superiors and workmates who have supported me over the past two years," he acknowledges.

The sense of camaraderie and teamwork at the Council has been instrumental in his growth, providing him with opportunities to learn, grow, and make meaningful contributions.

Looking Ahead: Exciting Opportunities and Future Aspirations

Winning the Young Operator of the Year award has opened up new possibilities for Luke.

"I still have plenty more to learn and grow in my current role," he says, reflecting on his career aspirations.

"This award has expanded my horizons to avenues I hadn’t thought were possible before. It’s exciting to have so many opportunities and different career paths—I’m thrilled to see where it all takes me!"

Luke’s long-term goal is to continue growing within the industry and to keep making a positive impact, wherever his career may lead.

One of the most exciting opportunities on Luke’s horizon is his upcoming participation in the WIOA delegation to New Zealand.

"I’m keen to see how they do things over in New Zealand and meet different people and learn from them," he shares.

The chance to connect with like-minded professionals and experience innovative practices firsthand is something Luke is eagerly looking forward to. His passion for the industry, particularly in the area of water and wastewater treatment, continues to grow, and this delegation represents a significant step in his professional journey.

An Inspiration for the Next Generation

For those considering a career in the water industry, Luke’s advice is simple yet powerful: "It’s such a wide field—you’re always doing something different, working with different people, different contractors, seeing what's happening in the community, and how it's evolving in the waterways."

Luke’s story is a testament to the opportunities that exist in the water sector and the fulfillment that comes from making a difference in the community.

Luke Reid’s journey from a plumber to the 2024 Young Operator of the Year is a story of hard work, dedication, and a passion for learning. His achievements serve as an inspiration not only to his peers but also to the next generation of water professionals. As Luke continues to grow in his career, there’s no doubt that he will keep making waves in the water industry, leading by example and inspiring others to follow in his footsteps.
