Each year, the Queensland Water Directorate proudly sponsors the Young Operator of the Year Award to recognise emerging talent in our industry - those who bring technical excellence, innovation, leadership, and community-mindedness to their work.
This year, we are thrilled to announce Matt Gosper from Mackay Regional Council as the 2025 Young Operator of the Year!
Matt began his journey in the water industry as a Water Industry Worker Trainee, completing his Certificate II and progressing to a Certificate III in Water Industry Operations. Now serving as a Water Treatment Operator in the Wastewater team, Matt is primarily based at the Sarina Water Recycling Facility - a highly advanced, automated plant with stringent discharge requirements due to its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef.
Matt has made significant contributions to plant optimisation, SCADA system integration, and alarm rationalisation. His leadership qualities have shone through as he regularly backfills the Team Leader role and takes on-call responsibilities. His commitment to excellence was especially evident during the transition of operations at council’s aquatic facilities, where he ensured minimal disruption and maximum safety for the community, even volunteering his time after hours.
Safety and compliance are central to Matt’s work. He plays a key role in dam inspections at Middle Creek Dam, contributes to safety audits, and actively participates in team meetings focused on performance and innovation. His efforts have helped maintain a 10-year LTI-free record for the Water Treatment Program.
Outside of work, Matt is equally engaged in his community. He volunteers with the local Rangers soccer club as both a player and coach’s assistant, demonstrating the same teamwork and leadership that define his professional life. He’s also pursuing a dual diploma in Business and Leadership Management, underscoring his passion for continuous learning.
Matt’s professionalism, initiative, and collaborative spirit make him a standout in the industry. As part of his award, he receives $1,500 toward professional development and an all-expenses-paid opportunity to join the WIOA delegation on the next New Zealand tour.
Congratulations, Matt! Your dedication and drive are shaping the future of water operations in Queensland.
