NEW / HOT TOPICS
1. Message from CEO

This week we say farewell to Naomi Carragher and wish her all the very best in her new role.  We would like to thank Naomi for her invaluable contribution to the qldwater team and members.  Naomi’s smile and can-do attitude will be missed.

On the upside we are welcoming Kirsty Hills into the team stepping into Project Support Assistant role from Naomi. Kirsty brings with her lots of experience as a project manager having spent the last 7 years as a Project Officer with Queensland Health. Prior to that, Kirsty completed several short-term contracts including a stint with Seqwater where she wrote procedures and workplace health and safety awareness modules for online training packages. This role sparked an interest in the water sector, which is what attracted Kirsty to applying for the job with qldwater, and we were fortunate to fast-track her recruitment so Naomi could do a proper handover before she finishes up this Friday.

After being with qldwater 10 years Desire Gralton is taking long service leave with a visit to her family in South Africa for 10 weeks, last day Friday 11th and returning to work early February. We wish Desire safe travels and a great Christmas with her family.

2. PFAS NEMP 3.0 Consultation Period Extended to 28 February

We have been notified that the Heads of EPAs Australia and New Zealand (HEPA) have agreed to an extension of the consultation period on the draft PFAS National Environmental Management Plan 3.0 to the new closing date of Tuesday 28 February 2023. This decision extends the deadline by two months over the Christmas period, and provides additional time for our and other sectors to prepare a considered response to the proposed changes. The Draft of the PFAS NEMP 3.0 and supporting documents are available on the NEMP 3.0 consultation website.

qldwater is working with WSAA and our colleagues in the recently established National Water Sector Contaminants of Emerging Concern Working Group to develop a response to the PFAS NEMP 3.0. WSAA is facilitating an industry consultation session for the urban water sector through that Working Group, which is scheduled to take place on 24 November. If you wish to be involved in that session, but have not otherwise received an invitation, or require more information please contact lreeves@qldwater.com.au.

qldwater is also partnering with LGAQ to host an information session  to highlight potential concerns with the new guidelines, considering the newly introduced guidance for biosolids and organic waste. If you are interested in participating in that webinar on 2 December at 10am, please register using the link PFAS NEMP 3.0 - Information session for Councils.

3. WSAA Report Launched

Yesterday the Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) released the “Closing the Water for People and Communities Gap: Improving water services to First Nations remote communities” Report at a special event in Canberra.  The Hon. Linda Burney MP, Minister for Indigenous Australians, launched the report which presents the most complete snapshot of the current status of water servicing of remote communities across Australia including seven recommendations to overcome systemic issues and other challenges.
